When we talk about “trafficking” from a BSA/AML/CFT perspective, it can include a wide variety of illegal activity. For example, there’s drug trafficking, human trafficking, wildlife trafficking, etc. It’s also important to remember that trafficking isn’t just a singular act and you often need to be on the lookout for other associated types of activity. For example, drug trafficking isn’t just the sale of drugs which means you need to have to have an awareness of the different stages of the drug trade. It often starts with obtaining precursor chemicals and then manufacturing the drugs, then there’s distribution and sales and money laundering that all play a part in drug trafficking. It might not be activity related to actual sales of drugs that tip you off or that your systems pick up, it might be activity related to smuggling drugs, manufacturing drugs, storing drugs, etc.
