HMDA: Reporting the Loan Amount

Reporting the loan amount for HMDA can be tricky. First of all, you are required to report the exact amount; there is no rounding for HMDA. So, if a loan was originated for $110,500.24, you would report 110500.24 on your LAR. Not all loans/lines are originated, however, and the amount you report could differ, depending on the action. For example, if the application was denied, closed for incompleteness or withdrawn, you report the loan amount requested by the applicant and if the request was approved but not accepted, you report the loan amount that was approved.

It can be easy to get tripped up on those scenarios involving counteroffers. That is because sometimes you report the loan amount granted but sometimes you report the amount applied for. You could even end up reporting the amount of an accepted counteroffer, even though the loan/line is never originated.
