When it comes to collecting Demographic Information for HMDA, we like to say, “don’t touch it.” In other words, what the applicant provides is what you report. Even if you know they marked a wrong box or are intentionally providing incorrect information, you report what they provide. So, if an applicant who appears to be a white female marks the boxes to indicate “male” for sex and writes “Martian” on the other line for race, that’s what you report on your HMDA LAR. Or, you might run into instances where applicants indicate they do not wish to provide their Demographic Information, and that’s okay, too. Just remember, if you see them face to face, you still have to report it on the basis of your visual observation.
