Using Your Risk Assessment to Optimize Monitoring

A risk assessment is a key component of your overall BSA/AML/CFT program. It should not be a guess or a shot in the dark rather it’s a process you go through in order to reach a conclusion about the risks you are facing. For example, you should be asking and prepared to answer the following questions:

  1. What and where are the risks within our institution?
  2. What’s been done to mitigate these risks?
  3. Where do we stand after identifying and mitigating the risks?

Knowing what your risks are and where they come from can also help you to focus your efforts when it comes to suspicious activity monitoring.
