Fair Lending: What is Redlining?

If you’ve ever been in discussions or training regarding fair lending you might hear the term “redlining” thrown around from time to time. In October 2021, the Department of Justice announced a new initiative to combat redlining on the same day the OCC and CFPB reached an agreement to resolve redlining allegations against a bank in Memphis, Tennessee. So, what exactly is redlining and why is it a fair lending issue?
